Rumble of the Grey Pavement
William J. Hall - December 27, 1978

Blood on the sidewalk
Blues in the street
Moon waxing bitter
And the new year looking sweet
With my ear to the asphalt
And my eye on the tenement
I can hear her whispers
In the rumble of the grey pavement
She says, "I won't do no harm to you
"I just want someone to talk to."

She's a jaded lady
But I love her so
You can feel her pulse beats
Where the red light stops and the green lights go
With her skirts in the water
Torch-bearer clutching the sacrament
There's a soulful lullaby
In the rumble of the grey pavement
She says, "I won't do no harm to you
"I just want someone to talk to.

"Someone to cry to
"Someone to care
"And wash the smell of traffic
"From my hair -
"Someone to make love to me
"Take me home and make love to me
"But I look around and see nobody there.

"Take me, take me, take me, take me"

She's a liberated woman
And a ward of the state
She's a saint and a liar
She's a little kinky but she swears that she's going straight
She's the girl in the white lace dress
Working just a little harder to pay the rent
Pay it up for the landlord
You've got to pay it up for the rumble of the grey pavement
She says, "I won't do no harm to you
"I just want someone to talk to.

"Someone to cry to
"Someone to care
"And wash the smell of traffic
"From my hair -
"Someone to make love to me
"Take me home and make love to me
"But I look around and see nobody there.

"Are you there, Billy?
"Are you there?
"You've got to tell me
"Just to let me know you're there."
