Stars Across this Country
William J. Hall - July 4, 1986

I walked back
Along the railroad tracks
From the midnight shift I'd been working
I looked around
At the sleeping town
Like the river that slips away
Autumn breeze
In the moonlit trees
And the highway softly humming
I heard freedom ring
Like stars across this country

I've seen the signs
In the march of time
Across miles of plains and mountains
I've held desert sand
In my empty hands
And I've seen heroes rise and fall and rise again
And I saw
Dawn come up
Like flames across the meadow
I heard freedom ring
Like stars across this country

Shining on down
Shining down on me
Shining on down
Shining down on me
Sometimes are good
Sometimes are bad
Sometimes I think I'm dreaming
But I hear freedom ring
Like stars across this country
And it's my home

Annie came down
And put the coffee on
And I stood outside the window staring
The kids were home
My folks had come around
And my great-aunt was out from Ohio
And I saw time suspended
In the echo
Of their laughter
I heard freedom ring
Like stars across this country

Shining on down
Shining down on me
Shining on down
Shining down on me
Sometimes are good
Sometimes are bad
Sometimes I think I'm dreaming
But I hear freedom ring
Like stars across this country
And it's my home
